Simon Walters, resident of Warlingham and a graduate of Caterham School in 2004, will be heading out to Managua, the capital of Nicaragua in October where he will be working to help improve the lives of the city's many street children. The children have been forced to leave their homes for a multitude of reasons including poverty, sexual abuse and violence. Once on the street the children are at an extremely high risk of being exposed to drug abuse, being used for criminal activity, or forced to enter the sex industry. Simon will be volunteering with the organisation Casa Alianza, a charity based in the UK and the USA which works to help and protect street children in Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras and Mexico. As well as helping to provide basic necessities for the street children, such as food, clothing and encouragement to join the residential centre, he will also organise projects for them to be involved in, such as street drama and music performances. Simon will also work in the Legal Aid team, where he will work to provide legal support and representation for street children, as well as human rights advocacy on both a domestic and international level. Simon is extremely excited about the work he will be doing. He believes street children are some of the most vulnerable in the world and he sincerely hopes to be able to help them through his work. He will be starting his voluntary placement with Casa Alianza Nicaragua on 18th October. As a volunteer Simon is responsible for all of his own funds, and as such, is extremely grateful for any support and sponsorship from the local community to help him achieve his aims of helping Nicaragua’s street kids. Simon is happy to be contacted by email for more information about the work he is doing, and for details of sponsorship opportunities at This email address is being protected from spambots.
