On Monday 11th October Surrey Women's Aid, the largest Domestic Abuse charity in Surrey, finally disclosed the secret behind their mysterious 'Shhhhhh' invites that went out last month. Their Chief Executive Beverley Pass, welcomed over 100 guests to the Lightbox in Woking before revealing the Big Secret to be a complete renaming and rebranding of the 30 year old charity as 'your Sanctuary'; For a Life Without Fear. The esteemed guests that included six Surrey Mayors, the High Sheriff for Surrey, CEOs of Surrey County Council and Surrey and Sussex Probation trust discovered what lies ahead for the charity that has been the first point of call for many women suffering from domestic abuse for many years. 'your Sanctuary' (formally Surrey Women's Aid) has helped thousands of women and children regain control lost when faced with domestic violence. With an average of two women being killed per week by a current or former partner, relaunching the brand has come at a time when more people need to know that 'your Sanctuary' are there to help and people do not have to feel alone. According to Walby and Allen 2004, 54% of rapes are committed on by their current or former partner, so it is imperative that organisations like 'your Sanctuary' are here to help victims. Beverley Pass, CEO of 'your Sancuary' said: "Survivors and community partners told us that we were providing them with great support, but we weren't making enough people aware of our work and our name was not reflective enough of our aims. As a supportive charity we want to reflect society's needs and ensure that people who need us can take advantage of our services. Our relaunch marks the start of wonderful things to come, as we come back with a brand new avatar to put up a stronger fight against domestic violence in all it's forms. Ultimately my team and I are working hard to campaign and support people to live 'A Life Without Fear'. Which we hope will demonstrate a more open, inclusive and welcoming message'. Diahanne Rhiney, new trustee of 'your Sanctuary' said: "I am honoured to be involved with a cause that has effected me indirectly. A friend of mine was killed by her partner and had her dreams shattered in an instant. Women's Aid has helped thousands of people reign back their much needed confidence that is lost with domestic violence". For more information go to www.surreywomensaid.org.uk |
