Earlier this year Tandridge District Council invited interested parties to submit bids to take over the Soper Hall in Harestone Valley Road, Caterham. The Soper Hall Group's initial bid to take over and develop the building into a multi-activity community centre was considered by TDC's Resources Committee on Thursday, 14th October. The Committee decided to invite the Group to develop its proposal, and submit a revised plan by 15th December. A final decision will be made in early January, so it is now 'full steam ahead' for the Soper Hall Group to put together their plan to run the Soper Hall on behalf of the Community. Chairman, Graham Tapley, said: "I am very pleased that we can now progress further with this exciting and worthwhile project. I am keen to see the Soper Hall restored as a real hub for our Community for years to come and this is a step in the right direction. This is a community project, and can only succeed with community backing and involvement". The recent open evening was a great success with over 40 people signed up as "Friends" offering help and support. Now that they have received the green light, the Group has been talking to potential users of the hall, looking at sources of funding, developing their ambitions and finalising their business plan. Tandridge District Councillor for Caterham Harestone, and member of the Soper Hall Group, Beverley Connolly, said: "The Group is eager to hear from any local businesses or people who would like to get involved with the project and/or help with funding. Funding is a crucial issue and we need to work hard to raise the necessary amount to update the hall." The first newsletter of the 'Friends of Soper Hall' has been sent out this week.
