Local shops and businesses have been brushing up on their retail skills lately, with the help of business gurus 'Metamorphosis'. Retail members of the Shop Smart loyalty scheme were invited to a presentation by Ellie Kidson of Metamorphosis who outlined ways they could enhance their shop window displays and attract more customers. During her presentation, which took place in Caterham's Soper Hall, Ellie said: “Independent retailers are under a lot of pressure from the big stores, chains, the internet and the recession. It is so important that independent shops strive to provide a first-class personal service in-store while at the same time attracting passers-by with eye-catching displays. It needn't cost a lot of money to create the same or even better effect that some of the big stores achieve – a lot can be done with a little imagination!” Ellie went on to describe to the audience techniques that can be used to enhance their window displays, by using colour, seasonal props and careful positioning of goods to make the most of the display area. Some of the retailers also signed up for one-to-one sessions where Ellie visited their store and pointed out simple measures to enhance their existing store layout. One of the retailers to benefit from Ellie's expertise was local jeweller, Peter Groom, who said: “Ellie came to my shop and told me, very gently, how we could improve things. It was good to hear her ideas, we are aware we can always do things better!” Andrew Browne, Chair of the Caterham Business Partnership, said: “We are delighted to offer our Shop Smart business members an opportunity to work with Metamorphosis, who advise many independent retailers. It is part of our programme for Caterham.” Exciting plans for Shop Smart members include a grand draw or lottery, more artificial snow, special Christmas attractions and new offers.
