1. A single line of railway track was laid from Caterham Junction, now Purley Station, to South Metropolitan District Asylum (later St Lawrence's Hospital, now Oaklands House) to carry the materials to build the asylum. In places the gradient was 1 in 30.
2. The first cinema in Caterham, the 'Electric Theatre'. It was formerly a coachbuilders.
3. Caterham Hill Library opened at 53 High Street (now Budgens Supermarket) in 1938. In 1945 it moved to Westway, and in 1964 to its present building.
