On Thursday 3rd November Caterham Rotary Club presented its Sporting Excellence Award for 2011 to Woldingham School pupil, Rosie Cardoe. Rosie was nominated for the award by the Head of PE at Woldingham School, Jenny Tower. 14 year-old Rosie has been diving for three years and competes on 1 metre, 3 metre and high board platforms, training at Crystal Palace National Sports Stadium. Amongst many recent successes she came second in the London Youth Games, diving for Wandsworth. In the ASA National finals held in Sheffield in July she came first in the platform competition at 5m and 7.5m winning a gold medal and being declared national champion. She also took a silver medal in the synchronised diving and a bronze in the 3m event. The Sporting Excellence Award was instituted by Caterham Rotary Club in 2008 and is open to all students age 11 to 18 who either live locally or attend a local school. Michael Dalton of Caterham Rotary Club said: "The Rotary panel were very impressed with the commitment and dedication shown by Rosie in her chosen sport of diving. She has already had a very successful career in the sport and her aspirations for the future are ambitious. The Rotary Club of Caterham is delighted to make this award and wishes her every success in the future." Rosie was given a cheque for £250 and a certificate for winning the award by the President of Caterham Rotary, David Mole. 18 year-old netball player, Harriet Shaw from South Godstone was awarded the second prize of £150 and 15 year-old Catherine O'Connor, a hockey player from Kenley, received third prize of £100. On receiving her award, Rosie said: "Thank you to Rotary Club for choosing me for the award - it is a privilege to have such great recognition for my diving. I would also like to thank Mrs Tower and Woldingham School for nominating me and supporting me." |
