As always seems to be the case, the season run in provided many twists and turns. The Leafe got into a strong position whereby survival was in their hands but ultimately it ended in disappointment with the club relegated for the first time in its history. Going into the last nine games Whyteleafe had nine points to make up on Burgess Hill in order to climb out of the relegation zone. This was reduced to three by the time the two teams met down at Burgess Hill, thanks to draws against Hythe and Faversham and a fantastic away win at promotion chasing Folkestone. So a Leafe win at Burgess Hill would take them out of the relegation spot and leave us having to equal Burgess Hill's results in the remaining four games to stay up. A large travelling support watched Ian Selley pull the strings in midfield and Leafe run out 4-0 winners. The impossible was now looking a possible. The great escape was on. Unfortunately Leafe lost the next two games against Merstham and eventual play-off winners Bognor Regis, but Burgess Hill lost both as well so no ground was conceded. The penultimate game saw us play away at Crawley Down and although dominating the game Leafe ended up drawing. Burgess Hill however won which meant everything went to the last game where Leafe were at home to Whitstable and Burgess Hill were at home to title chasing Dulwich. Leafe ran out 2-0 winners but news filtered in to the ground that Burgess Hill had taken a shock 1-0 lead with 15 minutes to go, which they held on to, meaning Whyteleafe were relegated. At the time of writing it's still unknown which division we'll be playing in next season but you can catch up by visiting www.theleafe.co.uk. |
