It may be the close season but work continues down at Whyteleafe. The pitch has to be re-seeded and the terracing and standing areas need weeding. General maintenance to club house and the dressing rooms will also be undertaken and this work will all be carried out by club volunteers. Thankfully, down at Whyteleafe we have some very committed individuals who put many hours into ensuring that the facilities are kept up to standard, a job that is very much appreciated.
In football matters, we have had to find a new manager, after Stuart Massey resigned to concentrate on other business activities. Stuart is a very popular figure down at the Leafe and we all wish him well in the future. Leafe Chairman, Mark Coote, acted swiftly in appointing ex AFC Wimbledon and Chipstead manager Nicky English and we all hope he brings success in the coming season.
Being a World Cup year the clubhouse has been showing games on the big screen. The England games have been well attended, boosting bar sales during what is normally a quiet time. During the early stages of the tournament most of the talk had been centred around the din of the vuvuzelas. Spotting a chance for a bit of publicity we issued a press release announcing that Whyteleafe were to be the first club to ban vuvuzelas from their ground and clubhouse. The story was picked up by the local weeklies and also by non league news online. In addition to that we were very happy to come to the attention of the BBC. They included our decision in an online story about vuvuzela bans worldwide, and which found us in the same story as Borussia Dortmund, Arsenal and Tottenham. Surely a first!
